Axial Driver Jake Hallenbeck – NorCal Rock Racing – 2014 Finale

With this being Nor Cal Rock Racing’s Championship race, we all knew that Jake being the defending 2013 Champion, might as well have a bull’s-eye on his back! Every team had one thing in mind, “beating Jake Hallenbeck!” As things were getting started and heat races were being randomly drawn, Jake found out he had been drawn to start in the back of the pack. Starting in the back forces Jake to work his way through slower traffic, which sometimes is a challenge in itself on a course like this.

With the two other power house teams of concern drawing the same heat race, this would give us an idea of how the rest of the day was going to go. Jake found himself being held up by certain drivers, slowing him down considerably. By the end of the race, Jake had worked his way up to finish 2nd behind his closest competitor in the points standings. This was going to be a showdown!

As the team was going over the car in the pits, Jake found out that they had a transmission cooler failure. Without a spare cooler, they decided to bypass the trans-cooler altogether and hope for the best.

Starting in the back of heat race 2 once again meant that Jake would have to rely on his skills to get him out in front to secure a better starting position for the main event. As the race started and Jake charged through the pack, he suffered a broken axle in the first rock pile. He maintained his pace the best he could to finish that heat in what appeared to be 4th place. Jake and his team quickly went to work pulling the axle, and in the meantime damaged the inner seal.

Fortunately, with Trail Gear’s large fill cap on their axles, they were able to get a pry bar in there so they could get the axle changed without having to pull the entire axle apart to put the seal housing back in. As it was, they finished with minutes to spare for the start of the main event!

When the teams lined up for the main event, I could see Jon Cagliero starting in the front row. Jon was only two points behind Jake in the points race. Jake was forced to start mid-pack and have to work his way through traffic once again! With the lineup in place and the sun in their eyes, the race for the Championship was about to begin!

From what I could see, Jake got a great hole shot and by the first and second rock pile he found himself in 3rd place. He drove the wheels off his bomber buggy and began to reel in the leaders…until his engine’s heating issue began to come back and haunt him. He was forced to pace himself for the longer main event so he could be in the hunt at the finish. He maintained his 3rd place position throughout the race until he got over taken by a car during a yellow flag.

Out of his control at that point, Jake knew he needed to gain that position back and get closer to the front for a chance to keep his lead in the points standings. With one lap to go, Jake overtook that 3rd position again but was running out of time to catch the leaders. When the race came to an end, Gary Ferravanti Sr. crossed the line first, followed by Jon Cagliero, and Jake finishing in 3rd and collecting another podium finish!

With the results of the race in place, it was time to figure out the point standings and who would be the 2014 Season Champion! With Jon Cagliero finishing the race in 2nd and Jake finishing in 3rd, it meant that they were tied in points for the 2014 season. With nothing in the rule book stating what to do in the case of a tie, John Goodby of Nor Cal Rock Racing decided to go with a motocross rule that states whoever crossed the finish line first between the two points leaders would be the new Champion.

Like the true Sportsman and Champion that Jake Hallenbeck is, he looked at Goodby and stated, “As long as you will assure me that this will be in the rule books in the future, I am good with that.” In the same breath, Jake asked John if he could deliver the Championship trophy to Jon Cagliero himself. Goodby agreed as long as he could be present. They together they delivered the trophy to Jon Cagliero and named him the 2014 Nor Cal Rock Racing Champion! It’s never easy in racing to except a 2nd place finish, but Jake did it with grace and style.

As the season concludes, I look forward to seeing if Jake can pick up new sponsors in the off season so he too can upgrade his rig to what most of the powerhouse rigs are running. Jake proves to me that you can stay on the podium with driving skills alone, but to be able to win races consistently you have to equal the playing field and run Independent Front Suspension with big horsepower!

All in all, in two years of racing the Ultra4 class, Jake has achieved a Nor Cal Championship, a tie for another Nor Cal Championship, The Ultra4 Racing series Rookie of the Year Award, and is still in contention in the 2014 Ultra4 Racing Series on driving ability alone. If given the Independent Front Suspension and the horsepower other teams are running, in my opinion, Jake Hallenbeck would be a force to be reckoned with!

Axial R/C to support Inaugural Silver State 4wd & UTV Jamboree

The Axial R/C team will be headed to Reno, Nevada for the week of July 14th through July 18th attending the inaugural Silver State 4wd & UTV Jamboree for a week full of adventure!
The Silver State 4wd & UTV Jamboree (SSJambo) is a first year event catering to everything adventure and off road. Located in Northern Nevada, this event is packed full of reasons to spend a week exploring and enjoying the outdoors with friends.

The week kicks off on Monday July 14th with an Off Road Business Association (ORBA) OHV leadership summit. This is where some of the most influential minds get together to shape the future of the off highway community. This is also one of the most active groups fighting to keep public lands open for off highway recreation.

Tuesday July 15th starts with the Genright Tour to Virginia city for sightseeing to include the Comstock, the first major Silver Ore discovery in the United states. The day will end with the RallyVenture welcome party.

Wednesday July 16th marks the start of the RallyVenture. The RallyVenture is just like a RECON G6 for full size rigs. Axial is one of the 25 teams invited to participate in this invite only inaugural event. The full size SCX10JK will be piloted by Axial staff as they attempt to make history in Nevada!

Thursday July 17th will have Axial on the move again following our trusty partners at Poison Spyder Customs to Virginia City to explore the oldest Silver mining town in Nevada. The “Bucket of Blood” Saloon will be one of the highlights, known for its violence back when the mining town was running at full steam.

Friday July 18th will be qualifying day for the Hellsgate Grand Prix, an Unlimited 4wd Racing event to be held at Wild West Motorsports park. It will also be the day Axial and CKRC set up a booth for Saturdays racing action.

Saturday July 19th Axcial and CKRC will be on site with a booth showing off Axial R/C vehicles to the masses that arrive to spectate the inaugural Hellsgate Grand Prix. The Hellsgate Grand Prix will provide a ton of entertainment all day long with sidexside racing, Unlimited 4wd racing and the Deathbox derby.

Off-Road History: Jeff became an “off-roader” in 1975 with his first dirt bike, a Honda Mini Trail 50. His parents were members of an off-road club called the “Looney Duners” in the 70s and 80s and many of his childhood weekends were spent out at Glamis, where his step-mother’s father had a business called “Boardmanville Trading Post”. Growing up in Menifee, California afforded Jeff the opportunity to do a lot of motorcycle riding. He met his wife, Angie, in high school and after graduation, they began riding trails and camping around Southern California. They raised both of their children in the back of Jeeps and Angie recalls changing many a diaper in the front seat of one. Racing: Jeff began racing BMX bikes at the age of 10. He has raced under many sanctioning bodies in several different classes. He has raced Best in the Desert, MORE, SCORE, and MDR series’. He has raced Jeepspeed, class 3000 and class 4400. He has written rules for BITD class 3000 and 4400, as well as rules for Side x Side racing under the International Side x Side Association (ISA). He has created two different sanctioning bodies for racing, the California Rock Crawlers Association (CRCA) and Ultra4 Racing. He is co-founder of the world famous “King of the Hammers” race held in Johnson Valley, CA each February.

Jeff has also developed and published strategic plans for the Off-Road Business Association and the California Motorized Recreation Council on Johnson Valley. In addition, he is a regular contributor to OffRoadPress.com and SEMA E-news. He contributes freelance for Crawl Magazine, DirtSports Magazine, Pirate4x4.com and Off-Road Industry Magazine. In 2013 Jeff Knoll published a whitepaper called “Common Ground” that became the basis for Legislation that passed the House of Representatives and as of this writing is being debated in the Senate. 2014 King Of The Hammers has Great Results for Currie Racing

Johnson Valley, CA. 2-10-14 – Casey Currie returned for the 2014 Griffin King of the Hammers this past weekend, expectations for a win may not have been met, but the odds of finishing the race were on Curries side. The week long event took place in Johnson Valley, CA where over 40,000 off-road/rock crawling enthusiasts flocked to watch 158 entries take their chance at the 150 mile brutal course.

After Curries 3rd place finish in Wednesdays UTV race, he helped his uncle, John Currie prepare for Thursdays Every Man Challenge. John qualified 1st for the race. Just miles into the start of the race, John gained a significant lead on the other competitors and continued to hold that lead all the way to the finish.

“We make sure that racing is fun for our entire family and it was great to see my Uncle as well as my brother finish on the podium.” Stated Casey Currie. “Knowing that my uncle won the EMC in the same vehicle I raced on Friday solidified my concerns on being a top competitor for the King of the Hammers race.”

Casey qualified the #88 Ultra 4 truck in the 44th starting position. The race began at 8am sharp and once on the course, Currie set a steady pace for the first lap. The first lap of the race consisted of dry lake-beds, sand washes and dunes. Currie finished the lap with no major issues and came into the main pit physically in the 20th position.

Laps 2 and 3 were more demanding and difficult with the course making its way through Clawhammer, Wrecking Ball, Chocolate Thunder and more. These laps would take there toll on numerous Ultra 4’s. Some out of the race, others rolled over and giving it all they have to get back on all fours. Currie and co-rider, Oren managed to make the right decision when making their way up the waterfalls.

“It is important to have a co-rider with you that is smart, calm and can assess the situation. This is just what Oren does.” Said Currie.

As Currie made his way up “Backdoor” one of the hardest obstacles of the course, Oren had the challenge of guiding Currie up the slippery rocks. Other stuck vehicles would block the best lines and another vehicle would roll on its lid right next to them. This would be the only part of the course that would set the team back on time, but it wasn’t long before they made their way to the top and continued towards the finish.

In ten hours and 50 minutes, Currie and Oren crossed the finish line. Once at the finish the celebration was well deserved as the team got the results of a 14th place finish. This was worth celebrating since the #88 Ultra 4 was the first vehicle to come in that had only 14inches of travel, where as all the other finished had 20inches.

“We couldn’t be happier with our finish. It was a long day out there and the course was rough. The ruts were huge and dealing with other stuck competitors was a challenge. There is always the chance that they can take you out as well. Finishing in the top 15 out 158 speaks volumes of our team and the vehicle. Big thanks to everyone who puts this race together and on a great week of racing.” Stated Currie.

Ultra4 Racing is the latest and greatest off road motorsport event on earth. This style of racing challenges man to a duel with the elements. Unlike standard off road racing in a stadium or in the wide open desert, Ultra4 vehicles face challenges that no other motorsport demands. Competitors are not only made to cross vast areas of open desert, they also travel up boulder strewn canyons and negotiate terrain that appears impassable. To compete in such a demanding environment, competitors build custom four wheel drive vehicles that are made to crawl over the harshest terrain, then conquer the wide open desert at exhilarating triple digit speeds. This element of automotive enthusiasm is precisely what Axial R/C has set out to deliver in 1:10 scale, so the relationship between Axial R/C and Ultra4 is a very natural fit.

Axial’s roots are directly tied to motorsports, especially competitive rock crawling. As full size competitive rock crawling transcended into what is now rock racing, the sport became globally recognized in a short five years, most notably the King of the Hammers [KOH] held annually in Johnson Valley, California. Axial followed suite with its own version of vehicles that translated well within this segment of the off road community. Axial Racing & RECON Crawlers has brought r/c enthusiasts Big Events since 2007. The Axial West Coast Championships started the r/c crawling “Big Events” and was the first to ever have qualifying rounds and LCQ’s. Axial Racing and RECON Crawlers teamed up again to bring r/c enthusiasts and their families an r/c genre that has swept the World, known as the RECON G6. The RECON G6 is more than an event, it’s a Life Style. The King of the Hammers (KOH) and Ultra4 racing is also a life style and they are going to be getting their R/C scaler fix, in The Axial RECON G6. This is the last event on the 2014 KOH schedule starting at noon on Saturday, if you own an Axial R/C, come out and get your fix in this 2nd annual Axial RECON Ultra4 G6.

Bringing a power bar or Monster Ultra Zeros to G-Central is not mandatory, but highly recommended.

-A tow strap is mandatory. This can be a lanyard or shoe lace.
-5 scale items are mandatory. This may include side mirrors, seats, sleeping bags, etc.
-5 medieval scale items are not mandatory, but highly recommended. This could be a sword, shield, hat etc.
-Running the number and name of your favorite Ultra4 racer is not mandatory, but highly recommended.
-A spare tire is not mandatory, but highly recommended.
-A winch is not mandatory, but highly recommended.

Classes –

- 1.9 Adventurist Class – This class is for all scalers using 1.9 size wheels & tires. It doesn’t matter your driving ability or your truck’s capability, everyone and every truck is capable of finding adventure here.

- 2.2 Adventurist – This class is for all scalers using 2.2 size wheels & tires. If you like big tires, this is your class. The 2.2 Adventurist will face bigger challenges, and their driving ability and scaler capability will be tested, as well. The 2.2 Adventurist has become a premiere class in the RECON G6.

- Expedition Class – “NEW” for 2014 and available at the Birthday Bash G6, – This class is for 6×6’s and scalers with trailers. This class will have more mandatory scale items and is geared towards the builders who enjoy the challenges of driving a 6×6 Truck or towing a trailer. Wheel and tire size are restricted to 1.9’s. Tires must be scale licensed or scale knock-offs. Expedition 6×6’s and G-Rides with trailers will each be awarded.

- RECON Ready Wrangler Modified Class – “NEW” for 2014 and available at the Birthday Bash G6, – This class is for the new Axial Jeep Wrangler G6 kit. Drivers are allowed to run any motor / esc combination, servo of your choice, any 1.9 tire / wheel combination, & battery of your choice. Rear steer and dig are not mandatory, but highly recommended. A winch and Pull Pal are not mandatory, but highly recommended. No AR60 or Wroncho style axles. The Stock body, frame rails, transmission case, and cage must be used. Stock or upgraded parts for the Axial SCX10 may be used, including transmission cases, axle housings, drivelines, steering knuckles, C’s, etcetera. Drivers finding adventure in the RECON Ready Wrangler Modified Class are eligible for a new kit & swag package.

- RECON G6 Driving Diva of the Day Award – “New” for 2014 & available at the Birthday Bash G6,- The best 1.9 Adventurist and 2.2 Adventurist female driver will be receive an award for their efforts.

- RECON G6 Driving Durty Award – “New” for 2014 & available at the Birthday Bash G6. This award will be awarded for the top 1.9 Adventurist & 2.2 Adventurist 15 years or younger.

- Event Credentials and Finishing Tags – “New” for 2014 and available starting February of 2014, – All drivers that pre-register for a RECON G6, will receive event specific credentials to commemorate the RECON G6 they attend and all G6’ers will receive finishing tags upon completing the RECON G6 stage, because “finishing a RECON G6 is like winning a RECON G6.

Full Option RTR Deadbolt

Axial offers several optional upgrade parts for the RTR Deadbolt. Here is a quick run down of what is installed and why you may want to use these items.

A couple photos of the fully option RTR Deadbolt. Axial also offers clear replacement Deadbolt bodies, part number AX04039, for those that want to customize the look of their trucks.

First option parts that can be seen here are the 2.2 Maxxis Trepador tires in our sticky R35 compound, part number AX12022. We also installed our VMS beadlock wheels, part number AX08061. We will cover more on the VMS wheels later on in this article.

Next option part we installed is a 25t aluminum servo horn, part number AX30836. Axial’s HD aluminum servo horn provides more responsive steering with less chance of stripping the internal splines over the stock plastic servo horn. Clamping style head for secure mounting in high stress applications. Available in 23, 24 and 25 tooth spline counts.

Axial’s HD differential covers, part number AX30829. HD diff covers protect ring and pinion gears from being damaged by rocks, just like their 1:1 counterparts, all while adding a little bling to your ride.

Aluminum axle lockouts are another available option, part number AX30789. Axial’s aluminum axle lockouts are more rigid than the stock plastic lockouts, which will allow the vehicle to track better in all situations.

Another great upgrade is Axial’s aluminum shocks, part number AX30092. Aluminum shocks provide better dampening than the stock plastic shocks, especially when mated with our Delrin shock pistons. Aluminum shock bodies also dissipate heat better than the stock plastic bodies. Oversize 3.5mm shock shafts for rigidity. Great for high power applications and long run times. Axial also offer a complete line of various springs to fine tune your suspension as needed, see the complete parts list below for more info.

Another option part that is hiding behind the HD diff cover is Axial’s HD ring and pinion gears, part number AX30395. HD ring and pinion gears are more efficient than the stock aluminum ring and pinions. CNC machined for precision. Hardened steel for durability. Great for high power applications. Axial also offers hardened steel overdrive ring and pinion gear sets, part number AX30401, for a little extra wheel speed. We also offer an underdrive ring and pinion gear sets, part number AX30402, for a little more torque in binds.

Axial’s HD lower link mounts are another noteworthy upgrade, part number AX30830. Our HD lower link mounts allow users to fine tune ride height and wheelbase by providing more adjustment holes than the stock plastic units.

You can see a handful of options parts in this photo. First option is the aluminum knuckles, part number AX30760. Aluminum knuckles provide more responsive steering and help your vehicle track better at speeds and in the rocks. Another option shown is the Axial Aluminum C-hubs, part number AX30762. Aluminum C-hubs also help your vehicle track more consistently in all situations, especailly when used in conjunction with our aluminum knuckles. Also notice the AR60 universal axles, part number AX30780. Axial universal joint axles increase steering angle to 50 degrees, that’s 60% over the stock dogbone/drive cup setup. These universals provide smoother action for a higher performing, efficient drivetrain. The universal is oversized; typical for 1/8 scale vehicles and made of hardened steel so it’s capable of handling extreme power.

Our intention with this project was to build a solid axled basher that can handle a lot of power. Axial’s Vanguard Brushless System was the perfect fit to supply that power. The 2900KV brushless motor, part number AX24010, is more efficient that standard brushed motors and provides a lot more power for hill climbs and general monster truck style bashing over the stock set-up. Providing control for the brushless motor is our Vanguard ESC, part number AX24260. The Vanguard ESC has an array of features that can be programmed manually or with a Castle Link. Highlighted features include adjustable drag brake, lipo cutoff, traction control, motor timing, etc. Our Vanguard ESC is compatible with both brushed and brushless motors, so it can be run with either configuration. Standard Deans® Ultra Plug® battery connector included.

Another great upgrade is the Wraith Stage One link kit, part number AX30797. This kit is geared towards the Wraith, but also works great with the Deadbolt. Especially if you are going to compete at rock crawling competitions, as the wheelbase falls just under the 12 1/2″ max wheelbase limit. Our Stage One link Kit replaces all the stock plastic suspension links with high quality 7mm diameter aluminum links. Eliminates axle wrap and unwanted axle steer, especially in high power applications. Axial also offers machined heavy duty aluminum straight links, part number AX30790, to replace the stock plastic lower links as an alternative the the Stage One link kit.

Axial’s HD motor plate, part number AX30860. Our heavy duty motor plate is for any vehicle running our AX10 transmission. CNC machined from 4.5mm thick billet aluminum, with integrated heatsink fins to help motors run cooler on those all day expeditions. A must have for any R/C overland adventurist! Axial also offers 13t, 14t and 15t steel pinion gears and an 80t spur gear to give end users an array of gear ratios to choose from. Add more torque for low speed crawling to your Deadbolt by installing one of Axial’s optional brushed motors available in 27t and 55t configurations. Axial also offers a complete steel transmission gear set for even more durability, part number AX30708.

Once again for wheels we went with our VWS beadlocks, part number AX08061. VWS wheels allow users to tune foam set-ups and change tires at will for varying terrain and conditions. Another wheel option offered by Axial is our black 8 hole beadlock wheels, part number AX8097. These wheels offer a little wider overall stance which equals stability at high speeds. For low speed rock crawling you can increase your Deadbolt’s climbing abilities by adding Axial’s 2.2 Internal Weight Rings, part number AX30545. Add even more weight by utilizing Axial’s 2.2 Internal Wheel Weights for the Internal Wheel Weight Rings, part number AX30546.

You can see our R35 Ripsaw tires pictured here, part number AX12015. R35 Ripsaw tires offer both a realistic look for the image-conscious scale crawler and for those looking to up their performance game. This 2.2 Ripsaw offers an aggressive tread design, greater ground clearance, and is made from a R35 sticky compound. The VWS wheels include black aluminum rings, but I swapped those out for our Grey beadlock rings, part number AX08133, just to match the grey colored suspension links.

U4RC Rock Racing – Glen Helen Series Finale

It’s a wrap for the inaugural U4RC short course rock racing series! And “wow” what a series it was, with tons of never seen before extreme r/c action. U4RC has combined the world of r/c rock crawling and r/c off road racing with a “scale” twist. This exciting new genre of “scale” racing is exploding across the United States, with series either running or slated to start in the near future in several states. And U4RC is very proud to be partnered up with Axial Racing for 2014.

Axial Racing’s partnership with U4RC is a perfect match. Especially since one or more Axial Racing rigs are legal in all four U4RC classes. Not to mention they are the overall dominating manufacture at U4RC events. We have had several drivers show up with “box stock” Axial rigs. One of which was a Poison Spyder Customs Wraith that took home a 4th place finish right out of the box!

On to the Finals racing info! With a total of over 50 individual rigs registered to race throughout the 4 classes. This was the largest U4RC event to date.

Heat racing started with the 1.9 Trail class, which is an excellent entry/beginner level class into U4RC racing. The action started immediately at the start /finish line, with driver’s battling for the” hole shot” into turn #1. Most rigs in the 1.9T class are your typical “scale” rigs. Of which consist of 95% Axial rigs, namely; Rubicon’s, Honcho’s, Dingo’s, and SCX10’s, both stock and highly modified. There was tons of action throughout the day in 1.9T, although these rigs are slightly slower than their 2.2 counterparts they are definitely not short of excitement. The 1.9T classes top finishers for the day were James Williams #95 with 1st place, Jerry Ellifritz #88 with 2nd place, both Axial Rubicons and Steve Richardson #90 taking the 3rd spot, with an Axial SCX10.

The 1.9 Competitor class was not short of excitement either. Jason Fletcher’s SCX10 based FB rig had a great showing. And word from Axial Racing Team driver Jake Wright is of a soon to be completed, SCX10 based U4 rig that is guaranteed to take the 1.9C class by storm!

2.2 Competitor class is the most popular class right now at U4RC races. And it’s no doubt why with several Axial rigs (Wraith, EXO, RidgeCrest, 2.2” clad SCX10’s) that are legal in the class. The high flying action started with Heat #1 and didn’t subside till the podium was settled in the Main. The rigs in this class provide a lot of “aired out eye candy” for the spectators and drivers alike. This class was also dominated by Axial rigs, with Rich Boltz #4 taking the top spot with his AR60 rear axled EXO buggy, Derek Gan #711 took 2nd place with his Wraith, and Reed Claxton #4415 grabbed 3rd place with his Poison Spyder Wraith. The rock sections were tough and these drivers and their rigs conquered them without issues.

Last, but far from least is the 2.2 Trophy class. This is what we consider our “U4RC grass roots class”. 2.2T is a builder’s class, with some of the absolute most realistic rigs in any form of r/c racing to date. With a minimum weight and stricter “scale” requirements, it makes for true to life racing action! Several of the custom builds run Axial drivetrain alongside of Wraiths that have been tweaked to meet class weight specs. Don’t be fooled though, these drivers flog their rigs just as hard as the lighter classes. Top honors in 2.2T were handed out to Chris Pickering #01 1st place, Justin Bodewitz #13 in 2nd and Shawn Jones took home a 3rd place finish. All three top rigs were Axial based, with Justin’s rig being a Wraith.

U4RC is excited and looking forward to our winter series, which starts November 23rd at Glen Helen R/C Raceway, with a full race schedule every month going into 2014.

Axialfest 2013 – The Recap!

Axialfest 2013! Where do I start? Hundreds of night stage gates? Beautiful trail runs through the vast Tahoe wilderness? Backyard racing on an epic handcrafted track? Scalers floating downstream on homemade watercraft? A weekend of camping alongside 200+ fellow R/C enthusiasts? Mud pits that would make your mom cringe? My head’s still spinning a month later! Let’s back-up a little, one year to be exact!

I attended Axialfest in 2012, and had a blast. I got more drive time in on that one 3 day weekend, then all of the previous year combined……………….seriously! I entered so many classes I could hardly keep my batteries charged in time for the next event / class! On top of running the numerous classes that were available, I was there to document the event for Axial. So, it was an extremely busy weekend for me.

Fast forward one year to Axialfest 2013. I decided this year I was going to only enter one class for the Terra Cross races and the rest of the weekend would be utilized shooting photos and video of the whole Axialfest experience, as well as interacting with event attendees. This would allow me to to take in the event’s ambiance a little more than the previous year. While I did miss the R/C side of it a little this year, I had a lot more time to document the event.

Friday got started with the UTAC event and Rock Riot, and the momentum never let up the rest of the weekend. Here’s a quick run down of the weekend!

Friday night was the first big stage for the G6 event. Drivers started out just before sunset, and were on course well into the night. It was crazy to sit at G-Central headquarters and watch all the lights in the woods flicker around you as competitors navigated the courses. Saturday was going to be the busiest day by far with events starting out first thing in the morning, and carrying well into the night. Driver’s were gathering at the rally style start box early in the morning preparing for the day’s events.

The highlight for Saturday was the creek challenge. Competitors that wanted to participate had to fab a boat / float for their rigs. Once they reached a certain gate marker on course, they had to load their vehicles onto their boat / float and send it down stream. Some competitors built basic floats that went where the stream’s current took them. Others got crafty and had powered boats that were either driven by their own motor, or the wheels of the scaler being carried. It was an interesting spot to sit and spectate from for sure!

Axial and Jeep team up for a Demo in Moab at EJS

Axial has been working with Jeep for a few years now. Even though the Jeep product from Axial was released in late 2012, the relationship started much earlier. Through this relationship, Axial has the opportunity to work directly with the Jeep staff on some fun events. One of these events is the anual R/C Jeep Demo in Moab, Utah, during Easter Jeep Safari. Each year, Jeep and Mopar throw a customer appreciation barbeque for their loyal fans. While everyone is checking out the latest Jeep and Mopar concept vehicles, they also have an opportunity to do a little Jeeping, Moab style!

Axial turns the small rock garden in front of Walker True Value Hardware parking lot into a small rock crawling trail paradise. For several hours, anyone at the event is invited to come over and run the trail in the SCX10 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon vehicles. This trail run is made to be just like the real thing, with a trail leader and a group of Jeeps out on the grippy Moab rocks.

The Axial staff started with a basic Rock garden with oversized rocks….

We were talking to a Moab local at the location, and he said we were welcome to come take some rocks from his property to make up the rest of the course, so we headed a few miles out of town, and loaded up the rock to bring back to the venue. SHHH, dont tell the boss we filled the Axial motorhome with slick rock :) Oh, of course we had to do a little indoor crawling while we were at it!

Once back to the venue, we arranged a full course out of the available space, here is the course tested and ready to rock!

The night ended with the announcement that Axial and Jeep would be giving away an Axial Jeep Wrangler RTR, so everyone signed up for the raffle hoping to get their hands on one of these fun little Jeeps.

The raffle winner was announced in front of a huge crowd, and the Jeep booth was closed for the night.

Even though the Jeep display closed down, we had a huge group of people who still wanted to run the Jeeps so we stuck around for a few more hours enjoying spending time with Axial enthusiasts, it was an awesome event and we look forward to coming back next year!
