2016 Mint 400 – Primm, Nevada

Words and Photos by Anthony Rivas

It’s Thursday morning and I am in Primm, Nevada to check out the Method Race Wheels time trials for the Mint 400.

I am making way to the start line for qualifying and seeing a few trucks and buggies still on trailers.

If you follow off road at all, maybe you know this truck sporting the green Methods - BJ Baldwin in line for qualifying.

You may recognize some of these race teams by logos. Some were new to me. Regardless of the name on the side of the car they came to race.

20160310_120203 20160310_115009 20160310_115125 20160310_115156 20160310_114832 20160310_114842 20160310_114952 20160310_120109 20160310_115905 20160310_115824 20160310_115729 20160310_115348 20160310_115228

I could probably stay here for hours just watching all the competitors. This buggy is almost a green chrome.

People are already gathered for time trials. There are a lot of people here, more than I expected.

20160310_124238 20160310_124540 20160310_130207

These guys are really in it. The sound of the motor screams so loud; it’s a rush.

20160310_130639 20160310_130940

These guys have some pretty good seats and everything they need.

20160310_133045 20160310_133122

This is just one section a few people gathered at to watch. There is a jump here. You know, people want to see big air.

20160310_133214 20160310_133344 20160310_140343 20160310_140515 20160310_145052

I’m headed back to Vegas and I see some of the trucks I just saw on the track. We will see what tomorrow brings at the Tech & Contingency downtown.

It’s Friday morning and I am in downtown Las Vegas on Freemont street.

There are lots of restaurants and casinos here. This is always blocked off for pedestrians.

20160311_121231 20160311_121344

Well let’s go see what the Mint 400 Contingency is all about.

There are lots of people, so lets make our way through and find some off road vehicles.

20160311_112506 20160311_112608 20160311_111858 20160311_111755 20160311_112219 20160311_112340 20160311_112226 20160311_112356

I really dig the paint schemes on these two, I wonder if they will be in the race.

20160311_112405 20160311_112107 20160311_112111

UTV’s are present and some will be racing tomorrow. There is a lot of lift pictured above and a lot of lights pictured below.

20160311_112454 20160311_112154 20160311_111728 20160311_112205

I can’t help but notice the front shock set up on this bug is wild. Maybe it’s common in this scene, to me its intriguing.

I am from Colorado so I dig the paint, but it’s just a cool Volkswagen.

20160311_111601 20160311_111630

If you’re into Off Road racing, fabrication, or just a gear head this event is something you should check out.

20160311_111702 20160311_114147 20160311_114210 20160311_114240 20160311_115200

If you follow Casey Currie than you may recognize this beast.

20160311_115224 20160311_115312 20160311_115405 20160311_115425

I saw this passing by on its way to tech and it caught my eye. It looks very unique compared to most of the racers I am seeing.

20160311_115429 20160311_115500 20160311_115620 20160311_115652 20160311_115742 20160311_115927

Cops?! That’s different.

It’s a Toyota and has an Axial Yeti Trophy truck on it – two things I like!

Okay, I see BFGoodrich up ahead. I think that’s half way and I have been walking for a while. On the bright side I am not pushing or pulling a truck.

20160311_120433 20160311_120418 20160311_120307 20160311_120638 20160311_120748

The vehicles are getting a little more unique as I get closer.

20160311_120249 20160311_120710 20160311_123351

I thought I misread the labels – Honda Ridgeline.

No, I didn’t misread that, it’s a Honda Ridgeline.

Something about the front suspension looked a little off, so I am going to make my way closer.

The engine sits in the back, and way back at that. Curious to know how it performs.

20160311_122657 20160311_120033 20160311_120122

Well I made my way to BFGoodrich and I see the Axial Jeep JK on display.

I also see this scavenger hunt. Win a Casey Currie signed Axial Jeep or a set of BFG tires. Wow, that’s pretty cool.

Some pretty cool vintage and classics down here.

20160311_121716 20160311_122039

If you’re hungry, there are plenty of food trucks here.

This DJ drove his stage here; this thing is a beast.

The stage for all the competitors, and everyone cheering on their favorite driver.

Rigid Industries has some cool trucks in their area.

20160311_112757 20160311_112846 20160311_112857

This Ford was drawing crowds over at Method race wheels.

20160311_112907 20160311_113042 20160311_113053 20160311_113211

This really got my attention. What do you think?

20160311_113223 20160311_113340

There is lots of carbon fiber on this Chevy.

Some new mixed with the classics.

20160311_113409 20160311_113430

This is a pretty rad combo right here.

20160311_113455 20160311_113415

The Bronco looks purpose built wouldn’t you say? The trailing arms mounting as far forward as they do really got me looking.

WOW! Check this out.

20160311_113237 20160311_113248 20160311_113255 20160311_113304 20160311_113308 20160311_113317 20160311_113529 20160311_113755

This looks like a piece of history right here.

20160311_113800 20160311_113805

Could you imagine racing across harsh environments in this?

20160311_113809 20160311_114027 20160311_114134 20160311_114822

This Chevy seemed to grab a lot of attention also.

20160311_114904 20160311_115033

This Volkswagon Bug looks like its been around the world.

Speaking of around the world, this Dakar wrapped rig was pretty cool.

20160311_112026 20160311_112032

HEATWAVE VISUAL had an Axial Yeti TT as a part of their display.
It definitely pulled people in! Who remembers first seeing this rig on Instagram?

On my way out I kept checking out vehicles, even if they weren’t part of the display.

20160311_125247 20160311_125303

Hmmm… I have got to check this out.

20160311_123533 20160311_123549 20160311_123554

All right, I have to head home. Races start tomorrow morning.

Ok it’s Saturday morning and I am back in Primm. Lets see what we can of the race.

It’s racing and it’s always exciting.

Its amazing how fast these guys go on a makeshift road, they are flat out screaming.

DSC_1378 DSC_1383

Pass where you can and it’s a full on commitment.

Love the drop out of the suspension on this Chevy, the picture below is in flight.

DSC_1398 DSC_1403 DSC_1406

These trucks were taking a beating, flat tires and broken body parts if you’re lucky.

DSC_1408 DSC_1421 DSC_1424

I have to admit, I was impressed by the Honda. This guy was flat out running this truck.

DSC_1426 DSC_1428 DSC_1441 DSC_1442 DSC_1445

Some guys pushed and quickly found their limits.

DSC_1447 DSC_1458 DSC_1465 DSC_1467 DSC_1468 DSC_1472 DSC_1476 (2) DSC_1499DSC_1247 (2) DSC_1345

Somewhere in that wall of dirt is a high horse powered truck with a driver standing on the gas. We can all hear it screaming like a banshee.

DSC_1312 DSC_1350 DSC_1314 DSC_1343 DSC_1341 DSC_1355 DSC_1268 (2) DSC_1313

Big air, coming in hot is a crowd pleaser, but was gamble for the drivers. This unfolded so quick that I missed the shot of impact.

He hit the cinder block wall carrying some speed.

Track officials were quick to respond.

DSC_1500 DSC_1507 (2) DSC_1514

Driving styles varied; hard on the brakes then accelerate through the corner.

DSC_1515 DSC_1519

Some drivers would just through it in the corner and drift it.

DSC_1472DSC_1488DSC_1366 DSC_1509 DSC_1392 DSC_1342

It was hard to get good spots for the action, but this just made his way on the course.

DSC_1325 DSC_1390 DSC_1482 DSC_1411

As the day winded down I made my way to the stage.

DSC_1410 DSC_1431

After checking out the stage and some of the finishers I headed out.

These guys made sure there was no shortage of Ford Raptors.

BFGoodrich had a pit challenge going on for every day people to see what the pros go through.

That center median is not even close to a parking place, but this place is busting at the seams with people. I am headed back to Vegas to unwind, maybe it won’t be so crowded.
