Brandon’s Trail Ranger: Axial’s Scale 4-Link Axle Truss

Here is a quick but very cool update on my SCX10 Trail Ranger build. Check out this new part off one of the upcoming Axial scale part tree’s.

This scale axle truss converts the rear suspension to a 4-Link and looks great! Installing it was a breeze, I just added a 20mm gray post to each upper link and used the regular rod ends to replace the original 3-link. I also cut off the posts on the axle case for a smooth look.

Parts used:

AXA1421: 7x20mm Post – Grey (2pcs)
AXA186: 3x16mm set screw (2)
AX80032: Rod ends (2, extras from SCX10 kit)
AX80018: (2, extras from SCX10 kit)

Hardware used:
M3x30mm
M3x8mm (2)
M3 Nylon Locking Hex Nut

The picture’s explain the rest!

    • i just unpacked mine, and i love it!! I got a little anxious and tried to put the 4link setup on, and realized that the links that came in the kit are too lons, what is the proper length for the top links? do I need to buy the aluminum kit to make the 4link work?

      • Hey Jason,

I am assuming you are referring to installing the 4 link on a AX90012? The links included are replacement lower links for a longer wheelbase. You will need to purchase the correct upper links to use the 4 link. I have a few parts listed above. However, recently we just released the aluminum conversion for the AX90012 and it includes all the parts required to run the standard 3-link or switch to the 4-link. Take a look here: http://www.axialracing.com/ftp/scx10_tr_al_links_upgrade.html

I highly recommend this upgrade, the aluminum links look great and also strengthen the drive train.

Use the AX30549 on the AX90012 with the Dingo Body. If you would like to use the Honcho body then you need the AX30550 with the longer wheelbase. Hope that helps!

  1. i like the low profile, is there a grey link that you can use one whole link and not 2 piced togehter?

  2. There isn’t a link over 70mm. The SCX kit comes with 60mm links on the uppers so I opted to show the conversion using parts available and probably the cheapest route with only the 2 20mm posts required.

    • This part allows you to mount the upper links with slightly more separation than the original 3 link. In my opinion it also feels much stronger than the 3 link .

  3. Quick question Brandon,

Can you use this up front with the steering servo on the axle? I know that the third servo mount would be gon, but is there enough clearance?

    Thanks,
    ~Matt

    • Hey Matt, I haven’t tried that yet. It might work, however your best bet would be to make a mount so the servo is mounted to the frame and completely off the axle to use this part on the front axle.

    • The SCX10 TR’s should be here in about two weeks or less. The individual parts will be available shortly after. Sorry I don’t have an exact date yet.

  4. Brandon,

For the 4 link suspension upgrade which is included with the rtr scx10 tr, why don’t you have some detailed instructions and needed hardware to complete the upgrade on-line?

I really like the scx10 tr

    Thanks

    Bill

    • Hey Bill, that is something we will have to look into. For now the parts I listed above will be sufficient but I apologize for not having a step by step procedure. Enjoy the TR!

  5. I JUST PICKED UP THE SCX 10 TR MODEL SATURDAY. 10/5/09 ALL I CAN SAY IS ….GREAT JOB AXIAL!!! THE REAR LINK MOUNT KIT INCLUDED WITH IT IS A GREAT ADDITION TO THE KIT.
YOU GUYS SHOULD TRY TO COME OUT WITH A LEAF SPRING KIT FOR ALL OF THE SCALERS WHO BUILD THE SCOUTS, TOYOTAS, BLAZERS,K10S,RAMCHARGERS I.E. OTHERS…. THERE IS A BIG MARKET FOR THIS.
P.S. THE WORKING LIGHTS ARE KILLER.

    • Thanks for the compliments! Leaf springs would be awesome. There seems to be growing vendor support for the SCX10 platform and I bet somebody will release a leaf spring kit if not already.

Agreed, I love the lights too!

  6. Do you know if there is a scale D Ring out there to put on the SCX10 bumpers?

    Thanx……Larry G.

  7. Hey Larry, just did some searching and couldn’t find anything that I knew would fit. I think making your own from Brass or steel wouldn’t be too difficult and really the only way to get the size right. If you do find anything be sure to share!

  8. Hi,

Please detail the additional parts needed to complete this conversion and where I can buy them.

  9. Brandon

Did find some D rings(4) that will work but are plastic and have to spend over $30.00 for,not bad,but are on proline bumpers part#6052-00. Will have to put shims in the same color as bumper so it looks like a wider mount, to center on bumper eyes because mounts are only 2mm wide and D ring eyes are 5mm wide.
Hope this helps anyone looking to do the same to there truck!

    Larry G.

  10. Brandon, found a site that is not in USA but is awesome! scaleoffroad.de If you want D rings they are called shackles, and are just over $5.00 each plus shipping that i did not find out about!! Just wanted to get this out!!

    Larry G.

  11. Note to all that use proline plastic D rings on the NEW scx10 TR bumpers, just use shorter screws to fasten to bumpers! The ends of d ring will come together without breaking.

    Larry G.

  12. rc4wd.com has some nice d rings that ARE metal if anyone is interested in them good company and they have more scale tires as well just food for thought

  13. I JUST PUT THE SCALE FOUR LINK ON MY 80 BLAZER BODY LAST NIGHT. IT WAS EASY. I USED20 MM ALLEN HEAD BOLTS (2 EA.) TO GO THROUGH THE TOP AXLE BOLTS (TO HOLD THE TWO PORTIONS OF THE AXLE TOGETHER). I USED BUTTON HEAD ALLEN BOLTS AS THE OTHER SCREWS 3x8MM X2EA( FOR THE BOLTS TO HOLD THE TRUSS TO THE ENDS OF THE AXLE) . THEN (1EA.) 30MM BUTTON HEAD ALLEN BOLT W/1EA. NYLON LOCK NUT. THATS THE THROUGH BOLT FOR THE TOP OF THE TRUSS. YOU NEED( 2 EA.) STOCK AXIAL BALL PIVOTS PN# AX80018. THEN (2EA.)TIE ROD ENDS (STRAIGHT ONES) PN# AX80032. THOSE TIE RODS BOLT TO THE REAR OF THE TRUSS. YOU NEED (2EA.) AXA186 3X16 MM SET SCREWS. THOSE ATTACH THE TIE ROD TO THE 20MM SPACERS. PN#AXA1421 (1PACK NEEDED). START BY COMPLETELY REMOVING THE 3 LINK SET UP. CUT THE REAR 3 LINK MOUNTS OFF WITH A DREMEL TOOL. FILL THE LITTLE HOLES W/ PERMATEX ULTRA BLACK. IT TOOK ABOUT AN HOUR TO DO.

    • Thank you for the installation tips. That sounds like exactly what I did on my Trail Ranger build. Sounds your axle looks really good now.

  14. If your looking for alot of lift for your SCX10 TR, use Venom Creeper shocks. Awesome! Will need to shim out top of shock so adjustment ring clears frame. I adjusted mine all the way to the last threads at the bottom of shock body and put body posts all the way up and it is so much higher!! Next step is to get the tallest 1.9 tires,Rok Lox at RC 4WD site, 4.5 inch tall and $24.99 for a pair!!! GO Get Um!!

    Larry G.

  15. Just to add to my last reply, with the Venom Creeper shocks i just did a flex test and you can now roll your tire over something just over 4.5 inches tall and keep all tires planted for traction! All of the drive train responds as it should. The drive shafts on this rc have plenty of slip movement for this mod!

    Larry G.

  16. Another idea for lift to your SCX10 TR is to use tamiya part#9805082 spring mount. Can use stock shocks with this mod, just romove bottom shock mount and place in the spring mount after mounting to top of axle housing where there is 2 empty holes. You will need to spread spring mount open alittle to put shock end into it.Will also need to put in spacers where you removed lower shock end. This mod will be alot less money than venom creeper shock swap,i just happen to have had 4 shocks from my creeper that i had replaced a time ago.I have not tried this mod, only was looking at what i have for spare parts and found this out. The spring mounts are sold in pairs for about $4 a set,you can find them at Tower Hobbies and many other rc stores.

    Larry G.

  17. Brandon

Can you tell me what i need to change only the plastic steering link from wheel to wheel in front on the new scx10 tr truck. From what i see i need to spend over $60 to do so! Any info for a short cut and not alot of spending?

    Thanx…………Larry G.

  18. Sorry Brandon, asked to soon about this small mod,i just made a steering link for the truck from my rear steer link from my creeper that was removed after rear lock out was put in. Had to cut angled plastic link ends off by 6mm and cut metal posts shorter(about 10 to 11mm long) that screw into each other. The red aluminum link is 112mm long and works just fine after drilling a small hole(5/64 bit) after smaller pilot, where servo arm fastens on, just do not go all the way through, just enough to thread to tighten down! The kit # is 8361RE (Red) at rc stores and sells for about $8.99 plus shipping.

    Larry G.

  19. Sorry, need to add that pivot balls #8383 about $5 for6, do not come with steering link ends in Venom kit #8361RE. You will also want to thread lock link end posts. This mod is if you only want to change front steering linkage to aluminum for more stronger link, can use any color link same size. Just want to help anyone that can’t spend alot of money to upgrade there RC!

    Larry G.

  20. Did find out that AX10 steering link may work on SCX10 TR and is just under $20 for 1pc. long link and short servo link. Part#C22846GUN if you want this color.

  21. most 4×4 veichles fitted with a four link rear suspension have a problem with axle walk,as the diff articulates up and down with the suspension the diff moves side to side. Most manafacturers fit a Panhard bar or Watts linkage to eliminate this problem.Do you get any walk with this set up,also most veichles i compete against(Winch challenge Aus.)that have 5 link suspension and coilover shock also run travel limting staps beside their shocks to stop them from pulling apart. My AX10 is always pulling the piston off the end of the shock on one of the rears.its still the best money ive ever spent.SCX should be joining it and my BR50 soon.

    • The Axle walk you mention is very minimal on the SCX10. With the design of the skid plate to triangulate the lower links the roll center was lowered significantly and this reduces the axle walk as you explained. I actually believe that the 4 link eliminates the axle walk even further when compared to the kits original 3 link. Thanks for all your input!

  22. BRANDON,
ARE THE 106MM LINKS THREADED THE LENGTH OF THE ROD? SO THEY CAN BE CUT TO LENGTH? ARE LONGER LINKS IN THE WORKS?
P.S. THE NEW TRUGGY IS KILLER. AND 4 LINKS ON THE REARS FROM THE TRAILREADY SEEMS TO HOLD UP BETTER. IT DISTRIBUTES THE LOAD BETTER TO BOTH SIDES?…… WAITING IN SOUTH OHIO FOR THE NEW KIT TO ARRIVE. I ORDERED IT THE DAY AFTER IT WAS ANNOUNCED….STILL WAITING……

    • Hi Craig, the 106mm links are not threaded all the way through. They are 6061 aluminum though, and the hole does go all the way through, so cutting and re-tapping with a 3mm tap will work to give you the length you need. Glad you like the Truggy! Hope you enjoy it.

  23. where are the all metal links for the SCX 10 TR kit????? i was hoping they would be out by now….any rough idea Brandon? Paul is sick of replying to me in CS….. :)

  24. Can you please post a set of detailed instructions on how to do this modification. Also, you don’t list the part numbers for the longer links. (you only list for the 20mm).
Please list all of the parts needed, original and aftermarket.

  25. Some time ago i replied that you can use venom creeper shocks for added lift to the scx10 tr rc,for more flex i have found out that if you take off the large spring and coller and just use as inner spring set up it lets all 4 corners drop big time! Just take apart and put shaft back in then small black spring, add oil if you want but do not need if your using this truck to crawl! Axial Rocks!!!

  26. HI I have the TR and I would like to know, can I put on the 4 link setup without any other parts needed (from the box) thanks

    • Hey Nick, the parts in the box are for running a longer wheelbase and Honcho body. If you would like to run the 4-link you can use the parts I listed above or you can purchase AX30549. This hardware kit will convert everything over to the aluminum links and also includes the required hardware to install the 4 link.

    • Hi Todd, all you need to do is add a 35mm Post to the current 60mm post that is on the upper links. The part number is AXA1424 and it comes with 2. Don’t forget to also pick up some extra M3x16 set screws to use in between the posts: AXA186.

Also, as a side note for anyone reading this, we just released the AX90016 Honcho TR. If you want to swap all the plastic links out for aluminum you can purchase the AX30550 aluminum link pack for the 12.3″ wheelbase. It includes all the required hardware to run the 4 link too!

      Thanks,
      Brandon

  27. Wow, why does it have to be so confusing! All I need to know is how long do the links have to be over all for the TR that comes with the short plastic links installed as the bottom links.

The problem with the article is that it talks about the 20 mm added to the factory links if they were aluminum. but does not tell you what to get if they are the plastic ones! …like on the TR!!

Im guessing I need 73 mm and 20 mm links to add up to 93 for the upper links? would the lower “short” plastics that come installed on the TR work if I got another set?

  28. I bought the kit truck from a friend. I don’t have the four link truss but i do have the alum. links (Smaller wheelbase) how can i get my hands on this truss so i can have the four link?
    Thanks

  29. I bought a few weeks ago a scx-10. And i converted it to a double 4-link setup. So in front and in the rear with al the parts that came in the set rtr. The lower links are gone be the upper ones en the extra links in the parts bag are the new lower ones. Oke the wheel base is 1,5 cm longer ,so what.
The wheels are near the corner of the verhikle exellent when going up no stuck bumper.
You only need to drill 2.5mm holes in the shock holder to relocate the shock. Like 1 cm lower to raise the hole scx-10. Then put the bumpers in as far as the will go. You can go up hill like 50-70 degrees.

    Good luck

  30. Just opened up my Axial SCX10 TR. Looks like I have a lot to read on this blog. But, I’ve been looking at the parts that come with the assembled truck and they appear to be upgrades. But before I tear the truck apart and start installing the parts, is there anything else I need before doing so? It appears I have everything I need but I’m not positive of that. Any help would be appreciated.

  31. If you use the Hand Brothers CMS Kit so you can put the steering servo on the frame,i didn’t find the need for the axle bracket and link to stop bump steer, there should not be that much anyhow on a 1/10 scale rc and it also bumps you down to a 3 link setup. I kept it the same 4 link and got a servo arm from a Duratrax servo arm set #DTXC8873. This arm is droped down so there is less angle on link.Three arms come in the package,1 worked perfect. It is made of plastic but is very strong. This arm will work just fine but if your SCX10 has been set up for crawling only i don’t know if it should be used.A website is given in the CMS kit showing how to install it.About $50 for cms kit and $3 for the arm set.

  32. How could the four link truss not be listed any where on axials website. WTF, took me months to source this single truss. Axial wake up and smell the parts number coffee. Love yahh guys but I hate you right now.

  35. Nice write up, I am wondering if someone can post how long the rear and front UPPER links are with the 4 link truss from eye to eye? Thanks

  36. I have an Axial SCX10 on order from my lhs, and im in nova scotia canada. Just wondering when it will be coming, i know axial is working on some stuff and the scx10 is on backorder, but like i said, do you know when it will be released? im going crazy sitting and waiting! lol also, does the scx10 come with leaf springs? and the 4 link comes with the new one right? will i need to purchase any other parts for it to fit? also, any upgrades you guys reccomend for a newbie to the scalers?

  37. I realy realy like the way this car looks, and, i was just looking at some of the specs, and, i was wondering, are theses realy any good? I am a 15 year old kid, It will enevitably get beat up, a lot, just what kind of abuse CAN these cars take? And, i was also wondering, these are a couple years old now, can i still go and get them from stores? Or do i have to order them from on line? Would apreciate it if i got a reply soon, thank you.

  40. Very nice answer, BUT… what if i want to use plastic axles? Is it even possible to use 4-link with this short wheelbase? Thanks Axial.
