Overland Expo West 2018

If you are into adventure travel, vehicle based camping or exploring the farthest reaches of this little blue planet, then Overland Expo is a must attend event. Each May, tens of thousands of people converge on the humble community of Flagstaff, Arizona for the sole purpose of checking out the latest and greatest overland gear, vehicles and theories on how to successfully explore by vehicle or motorcycle. This event was founded in 2009 and has already outgrown one venue, and by the looks of things is set to outgrow its current venue if the trend continues. With the current state of worldwide communications, many people can live their whole life without ever going outside; this has sparked a whole new group of people who wish to explore the outdoors in style and comfort. Overland Expo is the place to be if you want to learn how to do just that.

During the course of the event, you can sit in on many classes and learn basic off-road skills or insanely detailed recovery techniques from the likes of Camel Trophy competitors (If you don’t know what the Camel Trophy is, do yourself a favor and burn some hours on google and YouTube, it will change the way you think about off-roading).

The education portion of this event is worth the cost of admission; you will be getting first-hand information geared toward your specific direction from some of the most experienced travelers on the planet.

When you arrive at the event, you will probably have to wait in line, so plan to arrive early, really early. The best way to do this event on the cheap is to volunteer. To be a volunteer you will have a 4 hour shift for 2 of the 3 days and it gets priority “close to the venue” camping. This is the direction some of those in our party decided to go. We were just along for the ride, and a cool ride it was…

We could go on and on about all of the awesome things to do and see at this event, but we feel it best to break it into a few categories and drop some photos on you. We will start out with the camping systems. There are 3 basic ways to camp when on the fly, the traditional; ground tent (sometimes attached to the vehicle, sometimes not), the roof top tents (gaining massive amounts of popularity these days), and the baller status route, the full on camper or Expedition RV (basically a motorhome you can drive anywhere).

We then went on the hunt for the coolest roof top camping solutions and came up with some awesome vehicles/trailers to share with you.

The next group we had a look at was the campers, some of these are available off the shelf at a local camper dealer, others were custom grafted on the back of good 4×4 platforms…

Finally we have the ultimate way to travel, the expedition RV. These vehicles are basically luxury motorhomes built into custom habitat boxes, then mounted to the back of some exotic 4×4 or 6×6 vehicles….

This show is one of those that needs to be on everyone’s list of must attend events. There is so much history, knowledge and inspiration to be found here, it is very worth the effort to get there. You will leave exhausted, depleted of drool, broke as a joke but inspired to get out there an live. Safe travels my Axial friends!

NorthWest MogFest 2017

We love off road vehicles of all types, they come in all shapes, sizes and styles. One of the most unique events to visit and see some of the most relatively obscure vehicle selections in the USA is Northwest MogFest held in Sheridan Oregon. Although this event is meant to be primarily a celebration of all things Unimog, it has over time developed into the central meeting hub in the northwest for all European 4×4 and off road vehicles. People tend to travel from all over the country to the Waldersee Farm to experience this awesome event.

On our way to the event we just happened to be on the same road as Barry (@pacificbikerguy on IG), owner of #Voldomo, a very cool Volvo C303. We couldn’t resist following him to the event, we managed to get a little road going footage from our Rigid Industries Capture; so check out the footage!

We are fortunate to have one of the organizers of this event on the Axial Team, Mr. Ryan Gerrish. He has been telling us about this event for years, it just so happens that this year we were able to drop in on the event and see what it was all about. This year’s event theme is “Halloween in Mogust”, so we couldn’t even imagine what we were going to see there, especially with Ryan Gerrish on site!

Yes…. Those are Axial electronics!!

When you arrive at the Waldersee Farm, you are greeted by Barbara or Maren where you must sign in. This is not an event where you pay your entry fee, show up and report to your designated camp space. Instead, you must register (email and ask permission to attend) and then are asked if you would like to donate upon entry. The suggested donation was $10 per person per day. We happily doubled that figure (for two persons) and rolled onto the property in our humbled Subaru. We were definitely out of place with our Subaru (being a Japanese car), although it was unique enough to receive the nod of approval from a few of the already settled guests.

Ryan Gerrish came out to greet us and gave us a little tour, so we turned on the Go-Pro once again and rolled in to check it out. This 100 acre property has a beautiful river running at its edge, offering an awesome place to get out of the heat, do a little swimming and relax.

The Event
This is a private event held on private property. It is set up that way, allowing Jim Molloy and family the option of banishment, should it be necessary. It is a great idea, as people who have paid their $$$ for an event tend to have a sense of entitlement. You won’t find that type of person in attendance here, but instead a light hearted, fascinating group of hardcore off road enthusiasts who aren’t afraid to wheel the piss out of their odd vehicles. There is something to do every day, all day.

There is a backhoe contest for men, women, and children to participate in, where one must touch a few 5 gallon buckets with the backhoe bucket, and then return it to start position. AxialFest volunteer (and noob backhoe operator), “B” decided to give it a go, and we caught it on video. It is awesome that one of the Mog owners lets anyone and everyone who wants to try it, dive right in!

The Pit
The highlight of the event is always the “pit”. The pit is a long trench that is dug out through the middle of the property with ditches and moguls everywhere. This playground is open from sunrise to midnight, though it really comes to life at night. You can find almost everyone in attendance lined up on one side of the pit watching and participating in the mayhem until it closes down for the night. We were floored to see how much the vehicles on site were used and tested to their absolute limits. These rigs are being used for their intended purpose which is awesome to watch!

Our Subaru gets a Euro Pass
In order to participate in the pit shenanigans, you have to have a European vehicle unless you are granted a special “Euro Pass”, which usually means you have a Euro vehicle, but, not with you at the event. Very few of these passes are given away. We were fortunate enough to have parked near the gathering spot during the rules speech given by Jim, he used our Subaru as an example of the vehicles not allowed in the pit, and immediately following his example, he said our Forester was pretty cool and offered us one of the coveted “3 pointed star” passes! The pass consisted of mounting a huge Mercedes emblem on the hood or grill, and (more formally) a special yellow tag. We happily fastened it and were stoked to be accepted!

With being granted the special pass we had to drive down to the river and try the pit, right!?!?!?!

Expedition Trucks
Some of the vehicles on site were awesome to check out in more detail. The large Expedition type builds are always fascinating to us, so we ventured to their camping locations to get a couple of shots. One day we will have one of these to take to all the Axial events around the country! Here are some fine examples of our dream!

Unimogs
The stars of this show are the Unimogs. These rigs are so capable they will blow your mind! Described by some to be clunky and tractor like, you cannot deny their ability to conquer almost any terrain. They come in so many differing shapes and sizes, every style and taste is displayed with pride.

We did manage to get a little video of these portal axle giants in the pit showing their stuff. Very cool to see how easily they go wherever their owners point them.

Check out this very cool Jeep JK, that rides on a Unimog Chassis, talk about a sleeper! It was the only vehicle to our knowledge that actually came out of that mud hole under its own power.

Syncro Vans
Another fairly large group of vehicles in attendance were the VW Syncro guys. Man, these little campers are not just compact and very cool, but also their drivers wheel the living daylights out of them! Equipped with lockers and no fear, some of these rigs (and their drivers) can attack the most hardcore of terrain. We wish we had gotten some more photos and videos of these rigs, but with so much to see and do, we captured what we could… Maybe Rodney will have to come capture photos and video of them in action next year!

Speaking of VW’s, check out this little extremely rare vehicle. It is called the Iltis, or Type 183, which we believe is the replacement for the Type 181, or VW “Thing”…..

Pinzgauer
What in the world is that thing, and where can we get one? Those were our words when we first discovered this Star Wars themed Pinzgauer. Love the style of this rig, and it is pretty damn capable too!

Steyr Puch Haflinger
The Pinzgauer’s little bother, the Haflinger, has become one of our favorite vehicles from this event. These little 11’ long, 5’ wide, fully independent suspension rigs with portals are awesome! Did we mention they have locking front and rear diffs? We didn’t know that at first, but when you lock them up, they’ll go anywhere! It was fun watching guys try to make climbs without the lockers engaged, made for some good laughs and good fun!

There were so many other cool vehicles on site, including a plethora of Land Rovers (always capable), Steyr Puch G-Class wagons, Volvos and a few we have never seen before, even a Subaru van with swamp donkey tires on it :)… We snapped a few shots.

This event is awesome for so many reasons. This is a place where anyone who owns one of these unique vehicles can get together with other owners and learn the limits of their rigs. Sometimes that process is painless; sometimes it hurts a little more. We caught a few of those instances on film, check it out!

All in all, this has been an incredible experience. Coming from a Jeep/Subaru background, it was really cool to see how these vehicles are celebrated. The people are what really make this event what it is. We experienced so much kindness, acceptance and openness from everyone we spoke with. The on-site breakfast, lunch, and dinner were extremely good every day and quite inexpensive for what you get served! The jambalaya dish in particular was an inexplicably epic meal, you’ll just have to try for yourself. I’d fly half way around the world just to have this annual iconic dish on Saturday night.

The whole voluntary crew and staff do a great job facilitating an awesome group of people. The Waldersee Farm is a beautiful place to come and visit, the rigs are unique and awesome and the people are the salt of the Earth. Gerrish was right, we have been missing out!

Building the full size SCX10XJ: Part 1

When setting out to build a trail worthy rig, so many things go through your mind. What do you expect from the rig? What do you plan to do with it? What budget do you have to work with? These are all extremely important things to consider when selecting the donor vehicle. However, just know that no matter what you plan for, there will be extras needed, to include the expectations, plans, and budget. Building a 4×4 vehicle to go deep into the elements is not an easy task, and like most things in life, you get what you pay for. This means you have to outfit your choice with the best components available within your budget that will allow you to attain your goals.

This is not at all unlike developing the new SCX10, as all of the same parameters are considered, to include performance expectations and budget restraints. Not budget restraints for development, but budget restraints of our fans and customers. We often read the forums and see what people would like to see in the Axial vehicles. We are forced to make some difficult decisions when finalizing the package, as we want to include the world with these rigs, but also don’t want to ask for $699 for an RTR to get in the game. It is like that with all Axial products, so we do our best to aim for the sweet spot, enough features to perform at the top level, with a reasonable price tag. This is not an easy task. We are faced with the same decisions when building a full size rig. Do we want a supercharged V8, 1000 minimum on the RTI ramp, seating for 4, bulletproof axles? Of course we do, but the budget doesn’t allow for all of them, so we settle for what we can and have a blast doing it.

One of the most common things we read is…. “Oh no, not another Jeep vehicle”, well, I am here to tell you that most of us are Jeep people, so get over it. The Jeep brand is synonymous with the art of back country exploration with extreme reliability, exactly what we strive for with our little brand. It is a perfect marriage and we are happy.

When looking into new options for the new SCX10, we did what all outdoor enthusiasts do, we went into the woods to think about it, to do a little research. We were checking out all the rigs out on the trail and noticed that the XJ was a very popular rig for the most hardcore wheeler and for family back road exploration. We saw XJ’s that were exo-caged on 40′s all the way to bone stock 4×4′s loaded with the whole family and dog. This platform was exactly what we were looking for. It is one of the most popular 4×4 vehicles ever built, with millions of them on the road. Some say that Jeep actually invented the SUV with this release. It was not adapted right away for off-road use, as the old guard (Read: Wrangler, CJ5 and CJ7 owners) looked down upon these Jeeps, calling them cars with big tires, and promptly showing their owners the direction toward the nearest shopping mall or soccer field.

I personally had this experience with my 1993 Jeep grand Cherokee, I was given directions to the soccer field, immediately preceding my climbing an extremely nasty Granite rock face on Los Coyotes Indian reservation back in 1996. The CJ owners immediately began to bicker and argue that the other should climb it. Neither one did, nor did they express themselves again to me on the trail. They learned that day that a Unitized chassis wasn’t the end of the world, and that coil springs are like magic. The Cherokee (XJ) shared the same front suspension with the ZJ, though the XJ had leaf springs in the back, something the Jeep guys were used to back then. Any of the XJ’s and ZJ’s on the trail were hand built, as there were very few aftermarket components available with the exception of suspension which was primarily available to fit larger tires. We told some of our JK friends about our XJ desires and they immediately started flowing some memes our way, most of which we cant publish, but here are a few gems that made us laugh…

Fast forward 20 years, and these old grocery getters, mall crawlers or soccer field shuttlers are now extremely common to find on the trail. The off-road community has more than accepted them and many aftermarket companies now make a decent living supporting them. The hard part, finding a clean one-owner version with no rust and low miles, kind of like finding a Unicorn. One of Axial’s more predominant partners, Currie Enterprises, was at the forefront of developing suspension for these rigs so that they could be raced in a desert series called Jeep Speed back in the day. We consulted the Currie family and were introduced to Matt Chapman, the owner of the Cherokee that we based our SCX10XJ off of. As we have done in the past, we like to build the full size version of our scale rigs (see here…) to go out and experience what they can do, and stay on the forefront with regards to what the community is doing. At this time, Matt’s Cherokee was bone stock, as it had just been purchased and not modified yet. We elected to team with Matt and the Currie’s in effort to help develop the Full size XJ into an awesome trail machine all the while developing and testing our SCX10 II in tandem.

After a good amount of research, we started to compile a list of necessities. We knew the rig had to be able to go with 4 door JK’s on 37′s, as most of Matt’s friends were rolling newer JK’s. We needed at least 35″ tires. Fitting 35′s under the Cherokee would require some proper fender flares and keeps the cops in Moab at bay. Notch Customs said “35″ tires with a 4″ lift, some welding required”. Currie makes a great suspension system for the XJ as well as their bulletproof Rock Jock 44 axles, and you know we love the performance of Icon Shocks. So, what we really needed was some armor. We looked long and hard at so many companies making XJ parts, and there is some awesome stuff out there. Russ at Notch Customs introduced us to JCR Off-Road, who ended up having one of the most complete armor systems available. Then we needed some lighting, the natural choice was Rigid powered by sPOD. Almost forgot wheels and tires. In effort to make the full size version look more like the RC, we elected to run a 35X12.50X17 BFG KO2 All Terrain wrapped around Method Mesh wheels. The 17″ wheel looks closer to a 1.9 than a 15″ wheel. Of course we needed some nice tone out of the 4.0 straight 6, so the XJ would need a Magnaflow exhaust. We had some details to sort but the main wish list was assembled!

First things first, the rig had to be made as reliable as possible by going through everything mechanical. We changed all the fluids, belts, hoses, pretty much everything we could to ensure reliability.

So, building a full size rig is just like building a scaler, get the base kit, then select all the options you wish to install. Here is our list!

Ultra4 Racing is the latest and greatest off road motorsport event on earth. This style of racing challenges man to a duel with the elements. Unlike standard off road racing in a stadium or in the wide open desert, Ultra4 vehicles face challenges that no other motorsport demands. Competitors are not only made to cross vast areas of open desert, they also travel up boulder strewn canyons and negotiate terrain that appears impassable. To compete in such a demanding environment, competitors build custom four wheel drive vehicles that are made to crawl over the harshest terrain, then conquer the wide open desert at exhilarating triple digit speeds. Axial’s roots are directly tied to motorsports, especially competitive rock crawling. As full size competitive rock crawling transcended into what is now rock racing, the sport became globally recognized in a short five years, most notably the King of the Hammers [KOH] held annually in Johnson Valley, California. Axial followed suit with its own version of vehicles that translated well within this segment of the off road community. Axial has been very off-road lifestyle driven and fits perfectly with Ultra4 and the King of the Hammers event which is the mecca of enthusiasts pushing the boundaries of rock racing. Come out and join us at the 2016 King of the Hammers in the Axial compound located smack dab in the middle of Hammertown, USA. This year’s compound will feature a rock racing track and a scale trail where you can traverse a challenging course with your SCX10 vehicles and rip around the track with your Yeti, Wraith or RR10 Bomber. The scale trail will be open for runs during the day, then be closed down for some rock racing in the evenings.

Ultra4 Racing is the latest and greatest off road motorsport event on earth. This style of racing challenges man to a duel with the elements. Unlike standard off road racing in a stadium or in the wide open desert, Ultra4 vehicles face challenges that no other motorsport demands. Competitors are not only made to cross vast areas of open desert, they also travel up boulder strewn canyons and negotiate terrain that appears impassable. To compete in such a demanding environment, competitors build custom four wheel drive vehicles that are made to crawl over the harshest terrain, then conquer the wide open desert at exhilarating triple digit speeds. This element of automotive enthusiasm is precisely what Axial R/C has set out to deliver in 1:10 scale, so the relationship between Axial R/C and Ultra4 is a very natural fit.

Axial’s roots are directly tied to motorsports, especially competitive rock crawling. Axial at Off Road EXPO 2014

Off Road EXPO at the Pamona Fairplex is an event that you must attend if you live in the So Cal area. This is the big off road show where you get to see all the latest and greatest off road equipment. We were on the scene checking out some of the awesome rigs on site and snapping photos of the Axial rigs we could find at the show.

This year was different for Axial as we had quite a lot going on. We had demos going in the Poison Spyder booth, the Icon Vehicle Dynamics booth, and the Yeti XL was attracting eyeballs in the BFG booth for its first public appearance.

Many of the Axial marketing partners were also on site showing off their latest goodies…. Check it out!

Icon Vehicle Dynamics just picked up a big rig to take their products and show on the road. This beautiful rig grabbed tons of attention. Those that ventured over to see them got to try their hand wheeling some SCX10s. You would have the option of running the Ram Power Wagon, the Honcho or the JK.

Axial Driver Jake Hallenbeck – NorCal Rock Racing – 2014 Finale

With this being Nor Cal Rock Racing’s Championship race, we all knew that Jake being the defending 2013 Champion, might as well have a bull’s-eye on his back! Every team had one thing in mind, “beating Jake Hallenbeck!” As things were getting started and heat races were being randomly drawn, Jake found out he had been drawn to start in the back of the pack. Starting in the back forces Jake to work his way through slower traffic, which sometimes is a challenge in itself on a course like this.

With the two other power house teams of concern drawing the same heat race, this would give us an idea of how the rest of the day was going to go. Jake found himself being held up by certain drivers, slowing him down considerably. By the end of the race, Jake had worked his way up to finish 2nd behind his closest competitor in the points standings. This was going to be a showdown!

As the team was going over the car in the pits, Jake found out that they had a transmission cooler failure. Without a spare cooler, they decided to bypass the trans-cooler altogether and hope for the best.

Starting in the back of heat race 2 once again meant that Jake would have to rely on his skills to get him out in front to secure a better starting position for the main event. As the race started and Jake charged through the pack, he suffered a broken axle in the first rock pile. He maintained his pace the best he could to finish that heat in what appeared to be 4th place. Jake and his team quickly went to work pulling the axle, and in the meantime damaged the inner seal.

Fortunately, with Trail Gear’s large fill cap on their axles, they were able to get a pry bar in there so they could get the axle changed without having to pull the entire axle apart to put the seal housing back in. As it was, they finished with minutes to spare for the start of the main event!

When the teams lined up for the main event, I could see Jon Cagliero starting in the front row. Jon was only two points behind Jake in the points race. Jake was forced to start mid-pack and have to work his way through traffic once again! With the lineup in place and the sun in their eyes, the race for the Championship was about to begin!

From what I could see, Jake got a great hole shot and by the first and second rock pile he found himself in 3rd place. He drove the wheels off his bomber buggy and began to reel in the leaders…until his engine’s heating issue began to come back and haunt him. He was forced to pace himself for the longer main event so he could be in the hunt at the finish. He maintained his 3rd place position throughout the race until he got over taken by a car during a yellow flag.

Out of his control at that point, Jake knew he needed to gain that position back and get closer to the front for a chance to keep his lead in the points standings. With one lap to go, Jake overtook that 3rd position again but was running out of time to catch the leaders. When the race came to an end, Gary Ferravanti Sr. crossed the line first, followed by Jon Cagliero, and Jake finishing in 3rd and collecting another podium finish!

With the results of the race in place, it was time to figure out the point standings and who would be the 2014 Season Champion! With Jon Cagliero finishing the race in 2nd and Jake finishing in 3rd, it meant that they were tied in points for the 2014 season. With nothing in the rule book stating what to do in the case of a tie, John Goodby of Nor Cal Rock Racing decided to go with a motocross rule that states whoever crossed the finish line first between the two points leaders would be the new Champion.

Like the true Sportsman and Champion that Jake Hallenbeck is, he looked at Goodby and stated, “As long as you will assure me that this will be in the rule books in the future, I am good with that.” In the same breath, Jake asked John if he could deliver the Championship trophy to Jon Cagliero himself. Goodby agreed as long as he could be present. They together they delivered the trophy to Jon Cagliero and named him the 2014 Nor Cal Rock Racing Champion! It’s never easy in racing to except a 2nd place finish, but Jake did it with grace and style.

As the season concludes, I look forward to seeing if Jake can pick up new sponsors in the off season so he too can upgrade his rig to what most of the powerhouse rigs are running. Jake proves to me that you can stay on the podium with driving skills alone, but to be able to win races consistently you have to equal the playing field and run Independent Front Suspension with big horsepower!

All in all, in two years of racing the Ultra4 class, Jake has achieved a Nor Cal Championship, a tie for another Nor Cal Championship, The Ultra4 Racing series Rookie of the Year Award, and is still in contention in the 2014 Ultra4 Racing Series on driving ability alone. If given the Independent Front Suspension and the horsepower other teams are running, in my opinion, Jake Hallenbeck would be a force to be reckoned with!

Every spring Axial heads out to beautiful Moab, Utah for Easter Jeep Safari. This is one of the most beautiful places on earth to enjoy outdoor activities. If you are into Jeeping, RC adventure crawling, mountain biking, hiking, or just plain amazing scenery, then Moab should be atop your list of places to visit and enjoy. For the entire week preceding Easter Sunday, the who’s who in the 4×4 industry converge on this little town to share their latest off-road equipment, and their time with their clients and friends from within and outside of the community.

For Corporate Jeep, their week begins the weekend before, where they publicly unveil their Jeep concepts for the year. The “Underground” teams of engineers get to take their dreamt up creations, share them with the world’s press and test them in the ultimate mecca for 4wd enthusiasts. These are the vehicles that we all drool over, and wish we had a 1/10 scale body to mount on our SCX10. Even if we can’t have the bodies yet, we can still take inspiration from their creations. In downtown Moab on Wednesday night, Axial builds the Jeep R/C adventure course. This event is put on by Jeep as a customer appreciation night for all the loyal Jeep fans. Part of the lot is set aside for the Axial crew to come in and build a fun demo course. All you have to do is wait in line and you get to try your hand at some scale Jeeping in Moab! This year’s course was a little simpler than previous years, though the man-made obstacles were very cool!

Just after the official Jeep BBQ event, the Axial staff heads off to the “Secret Spot” as it is affectionately called. There is really no secret about it, as it is located right off the main road on the way to steel bender. This spot, however, is absolutely perfect for some scale wheeling. This is the one time of the year that Axial gets a chance to spend some time with all their “Full size” marketing partners. So at about 9 pm, somewhere in the neighborhood of a half million dollars’ worth of Jeeps turn up for a little scale adventure crawl!

After a brief safety chat regarding the cliffs we were about to crawl next to, we fired up the Rigid duallys (powered by 3S lipos of course) and shot a quick group pic before hitting the trail…..

In all, there were 22 of us representing Axial, Poison Spyder, Currie Enterprises, Icon Vehicle Dynamics, Raceline Wheels, CRC, Pull Pal, Rigid Industries and Savvy Offroad. There is something about enjoying this hobby with this iconic group of guys that can’t be beat. This was probably the time of our lives, certainly when it came to our R/C Careers. We were amazed at how much transferred over from full size to scale. Some of the guys had never driven an R/C vehicle before and picked it up right away. We assume it helped having 20 of their closest friends there helping (Heckling).
